Background :

Endothelial cells express three different receptors for vascular endothelial growth factors (VEGF). The induction of angiogenesis by VEGF-C and VEGF-A is mediated by VEGF-Receptors 2 and -3, while VEGF-B is bound by VEGF-Receptor-1 only. VEGF-D also acts trough VEGFR-3 in lymphangiogenesis and tumour metastasis. A naturally occuring soluble variant of VEGFR-1 was found in HUVE supernatants. It is generated by alternative splicing.
