Antigen/Gene or Protein Targets :
P. falciparum GAPDH

Plasmodium
Relevance :
GAPDH is a pivotal enzyme in the glycolytic pathway. It uses NAD+ to catalyze the reversible oxidative phosphorylation of glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate to 1,3-diphosphoglycerate, thereby generating reducing equivalents. In addition, GAPDH is thought to be involved in a variety of other cellular activities. These include putative roles in membrane fusion, tubulin bundling, phosphotransferase activity, nuclear RNA transport, and DNA replication and repair. Given the central role of this protein, plasmodial GAPDH appears to be a vulnerable target within the metabolism of the parasite.
