HSPD1 (60kDa heat shock protein) is a member of the chaperonin family. Also called the heat shock protein 60 (hsp60) it is localized in the mitochondrial matrix and forms a barrel shaped chaperone chamber with its co-chaperone Hsp10. The mitochondrial proteins fold efficiently inside these chambers contributing to the control of mitochondrial protein quality. Defects in this gene have been linked to autosomal recessive spastic paraplegia.
