Background :
CD2 a well known T-cell marker is a surface antigen of the human T-lymphocyte lineage. Also known as the sheep erythrocyte receptor, CD2 is a 351 amino acid containing protein that contains an Ig-like C2-type (immunoglobulin like) domain, an Ig-like V-type (immunoglobulin like) domain and a cytoplasmic domain implicated in T cell signaling. It interacts with CD2AP (CD2-associated protein) and PSTPIP1 (proline-serine-threonine phosphatase interacting protein 1). CD2 mediates adhesion between T-cells and other cell types by interacting with lymphocyte function-associated antigen (LFA-3) and CD48/BCM1. Interaction between CD2 and its counter receptor, LFA3 (CD58), on opposing cells helps in immune recognition and facilitates contacts between helper T lymphocytes and antigen-presenting cells as well as between cytolytic effectors and target cells. CD2 expression promotes chronic HBV infection and may also contribute to the hepatocyte damage. Expression of CD2 is common on all peripheral blood T cells, thymocytes, and also on some natural killer cells but not on B lymphocytes.
