Background :
TCF21/Pod1 (capsulin or epicardin) is a class II bHLH transcription factor that binds DNA through the consensus E box sequence (CANNTG) as a heterodimer and plays key role in morphogenesis. Throughout embryogenesis, strong TCF21/Pod1 expression is observed in mesenchymal cells of respiratory, digestive, urogenital and cardiovascular systems with highest expression in heart, liver and kidneys. TCF21/Pod1 also implicates in transcriptional repression of steroidogenic factor 1 (Sf1; also called Nr5a1/Ad4BP), an orphan nuclear receptor responsible for regulation of multiple genes that mediate sexual differentiation. TCF21/Pod1 plays a role in the differentiation/ specification of one or more subsets of epicardial cell types and TCF21/Pod1 null mouse pups die shortly after birth due to a lack of alveoli in lungs, cardiac defects and hypoplastic kidneys with disrupted branching morphogenesis of the ureteric bud epithelium, a marked reduction in the number of nephrons, a delay in glomerulogenesis, and blood vessel abnormalities.
