Principle of the assay: This assay employs the quantitative sandwich enzyme immunoassay technique. Antibody specific for CYP19A1 has been pre-coated onto a microplate. Standards and samples are pipetted into the wells with a Horseradish Peroxidase (HRP) conjugated antibody specific for CYP19A1. Following a wash to remove any unbound reagent, a substrate solution is added to the wells and color develops in proportion to the amount of CYP19A1 bound in the initial step. The color development is stopped and the intensity of the color is measured.

The cytochrome P450 proteins are monooxygenases which catalyze many reactions involved in drug metabolism and synthesis of cholesterol, steroids and other lipids. Mutations in this gene can result in either increased or decreased aromatase activity; the associated phenotypes suggest that estrogen functions both as a sex steroid hormone and in growth or differentiation.
