ncbi summary :
This gene is a member of the BCL2/adenovirus E1B 19 kd-interacting protein (BNIP) family. It interacts with the E1B 19 kDa protein, which protects cells from virally-induced cell death. The encoded protein also interacts with E1B 19 kDa-like sequences of BCL2, another apoptotic protector. This protein contains a BH3 domain and a transmembrane domain, which have been associated with pro-apoptotic function. The dimeric mitochondrial protein encoded by this gene is known to induce apoptosis, even in the presence of BCL2. [provided by RefSeq, Mar 2011]
uniprot summary :
BNIP3: Apoptosis-inducing protein that, which can overcome BCL2 suppression. May play a role in repartitioning calcium between the two major intracellular calcium stores in association with BCL2. Homodimer. Binds to BCL2. Interacts with BNIP3L and ACAA2. Also can interact with adenovirus E1B 19 kDa protein or Epstein-Barr virus BHRF1. Belongs to the NIP3 family. Protein type: Membrane protein, integral; Mitochondrial. Chromosomal Location of Human Ortholog: 10q26.3. Cellular Component: nucleoplasm; mitochondrial outer membrane; mitochondrion; endoplasmic reticulum; dendrite; cytoplasm; mitochondrial membrane; nuclear envelope; nucleus; integral to mitochondrial outer membrane. Molecular Function: identical protein binding; GTPase binding; protein binding; protein homodimerization activity; protein heterodimerization activity. Biological Process: cell death; positive regulation of protein complex disassembly; induction of apoptosis by granzyme; viral reproduction; apoptosis; positive regulation of apoptosis; positive regulation of programmed cell death; neuron apoptosis; response to hyperoxia; autophagic cell death; response to hypoxia; brown fat cell differentiation; regulation of mitochondrial membrane permeability; mitochondrial fragmentation during apoptosis; negative regulation of membrane potential; defense response to virus; positive regulation of autophagy; negative regulation of apoptosis
