Principle of the Assay: This assay employs the quantitative sandwich enzyme immunoassay technique. Antibody specific for EMBP has been pre-coated onto a microplate. Standards and samples are pipetted into the wells and any EMBP present is bound by the immobilized antibody. After removing any unbound substances, a biotin-conjugated antibody specific for EMBP is added to the wells. After washing, avidin conjugated Horseradish Peroxidase (HRP) is added to the wells. Following a wash to remove any unbound avidin-enzyme reagent, a substrate solution is added to the wells and color develops in proportion to the amount of EMBP bound in the initial step. The color development is stopped and the intensity of the color is measured.

The protein encoded by this gene is the predominant constituent of the crystalline core of the eosinophil granule. High levels of the proform of this protein are also present in placenta and pregnancy serum, where it exists as a complex with several other proteins including pregnancy-associated plasma protein A (PAPPA), angiotensinogen (AGT), and C3dg. This protein may be involved in antiparasitic defense mechanisms as a cytotoxin and helminthotoxin, and in immune hypersensitivity reactions. It is directly implicated in epithelial cell damage, exfoliation, and bronchospasm in allergic diseases.
