ncbi summary :
This gene encodes a member of the intermediate filament family. Intermediate filamentents, along with microtubules and actin microfilaments, make up the cytoskeleton. The protein encoded by this gene is responsible for maintaining cell shape, integrity of the cytoplasm, and stabilizing cytoskeletal interactions. It is also involved in the immune response, and controls the transport of low-density lipoprotein (LDL)-derived cholesterol from a lysosome to the site of esterification. It functions as an organizer of a number of critical proteins involved in attachment, migration, and cell signaling. Mutations in this gene causes a dominant, pulverulent cataract.[provided by RefSeq, Jun 2009]
uniprot summary :
Vimentin: an intermediate filament protein. Intermediate filament proteins are expressed in a tissue-specific manner. Desmin is the subunit specific for muscle and vimentin the subunit specific for mesenchymal tissue. Protein type: Cytoskeletal; Motility/polarity/chemotaxis. Chromosomal Location of Human Ortholog: 10p13. Cellular Component: intermediate filament cytoskeleton; neuron projection; cytoskeleton; focal adhesion; cytoplasm; leading edge; plasma membrane; intermediate filament; peroxisome; cytosol. Molecular Function: protein C-terminus binding; identical protein binding; protein binding; structural constituent of cytoskeleton; double-stranded RNA binding; glycoprotein binding; structural constituent of eye lens. Biological Process: Bergmann glial cell differentiation; viral reproduction; apoptosis; intermediate filament organization; cell motility; astrocyte development; muscle filament sliding; cell structure disassembly during apoptosis.
