other info1 :
Biological Significance: Sphingosine Kinase is a conserved lipid kinase that catalyzes the phosphorylation of sphingolipid sphingosine to sphingosine1phosphate. SIP receptors coupled to cell surface G protein to regulate cell growth, survival, motility and inflammatory responses. There are two types of SphK, SphK1 and SphK2. SphK1 is found in the cytosol and migrates to the membrane when activated. SphK1 has been associated with cell growth, prevention of apoptosis and cellular transformation. SphK2 is found mainly in the nucleus and in contrast to SphK1, it enhances the rate of apoptosis.
other info2 :
Immunogen: SPK2 antibody was raised in Rabbit using synthetic peptide corresponding to residues surrounding amino acid 603 of rat Sphingosine Kinase 2 as the immunogen.

ncbi summary :
This gene encodes a kinase that phosphorylates sphingosine into sphingosine-1-phosphate, which is involved in cell differentiation, motility, and apoptosis. The encoded protein plays a role in maintaining cellular levels of sphingosine-1-phosphate. The gene product also enhances apoptosis in different cell types and suppresses cellular proliferation. In mast cells, the encoded protein is necessary for influx of calcium, protein kinase C activation, and cytokine production and degranulation. Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants. [provided by RefSeq, Feb 2010]
uniprot summary :
SPHK2: Catalyzes the phosphorylation of sphingosine to form sphingosine 1-phosphate (SPP), a lipid mediator with both intra- and extracellular functions. Also acts on D-erythro- dihydrosphingosine, D-erythro-sphingosine and L-threo- dihydrosphingosine. Binds phosphoinositides. 3 isoforms of the human protein are produced by alternative splicing. Protein type: Lipid Metabolism - sphingolipid; Kinase, lipid; EC 2.7.1.91. Cellular Component: membrane; lysosome; lysosomal membrane; cytosol. Molecular Function: transferase activity; D-erythro-sphingosine kinase activity; protein binding; sphinganine kinase activity; nucleotide binding; kinase activity; diacylglycerol kinase activity; ATP binding; NAD+ kinase activity. Biological Process: blood vessel development; cell proliferation; metabolic process; protein kinase C activation; positive regulation of cell proliferation; sphinganine-1-phosphate biosynthetic process; brain development; sphingosine metabolic process; lipid phosphorylation; phosphorylation; negative regulation of apoptosis
