ncbi summary :
This gene encodes a member of the G-protein coupled receptor 3 protein family. The encoded protein is a metabatropic glutamate receptor, whose signaling activates a phosphatidylinositol-calcium second messenger system. This protein may be involved in the regulation of neural network activity and synaptic plasticity. Glutamatergic neurotransmission is involved in most aspects of normal brain function and can be perturbed in many neuropathologic conditions. A pseudogene of this gene has been defined on chromosome 11. Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants. [provided by RefSeq, May 2014]
uniprot summary :
mGluR5: Receptor for glutamate. The activity of this receptor is mediated by a G-protein that activates a phosphatidylinositol- calcium second messenger system and generates a calcium-activated chloride current. Belongs to the G-protein coupled receptor 3 family. 2 isoforms of the human protein are produced by alternative splicing. Protein type: Receptor, GPCR; Membrane protein, integral; GPCR, family 3; Membrane protein, multi-pass. Chromosomal Location of Human Ortholog: 11q14.3. Cellular Component: integral to plasma membrane; cytoplasm; postsynaptic density; plasma membrane; dendritic spine; dendritic shaft. Molecular Function: G-protein coupled receptor activity; glutamate receptor activity; A2A adenosine receptor binding. Biological Process: desensitization of G-protein coupled receptor protein signaling pathway; regulation of synaptic transmission, glutamatergic; locomotory behavior; learning; protein amino acid phosphorylation; positive regulation of long-term neuronal synaptic plasticity; synaptic transmission; negative regulation of locomotion; regulation of transcription, DNA-dependent; metabotropic glutamate receptor, phospholipase C activating pathway; protein kinase C activation; metabotropic glutamate receptor signaling pathway; activation of MAPKKK activity; cognition
