ncbi summary :
AS3MT catalyzes the transfer of a methyl group from S-adenosyl-L-methionine (AdoMet) to trivalent arsenical and may play a role in arsenic metabolism (Lin et al., 2002 [PubMed 11790780]).[supplied by OMIM, Mar 2008]
uniprot summary :
AS3MT: Catalyzes the transfer of a methyl group from AdoMet to trivalent arsenicals producing methylated and dimethylated arsenicals. It methylates arsenite to form methylarsonate, Me- AsO(3)H(2), which is reduced by methylarsonate reductase to methylarsonite, Me-As(OH)2. Methylarsonite is also a substrate and it is converted into the much less toxic compound dimethylarsinate (cacodylate), Me(2)As(O)-OH. Belongs to the methyltransferase superfamily. Protein type: Mitochondrial; Methyltransferase; EC 2.1.1.137. Chromosomal Location of Human Ortholog: 10q24.32. Cellular Component: mitochondrion; cytoplasm; cytosol. Molecular Function: arsenite methyltransferase activity; methylarsonite methyltransferase activity; S-adenosylmethionine-dependent methyltransferase activity. Biological Process: methylation; arsonoacetate metabolic process; toxin metabolic process
