products description :
For samples: Serum, plasma, cell culture supernatants, body fluid and tissue homogenate . INTENDED USE This GAL1 ELISA kit is a 1.5 hour solid-phase ELISA designed for the quantitative determination of Human GAL1. This ELISA kit for research use only, not for therapeutic or diagnostic applications! . PRINCIPLE OF THE ASSAY GAL1 ELISA kit applies the quantitative sandwich enzyme immunoassay technique. The microtiter plate has been pre-coated with a monoclonal antibody specific for GAL1. Standards or samples are then added to the microtiter plate wells and GAL1 if present, will bind to the antibody pre-coated wells. In order to quantitatively determine the amount of GAL1 present in the sample, a standardized preparation of horseradish peroxidase (HRP)-conjugated polyclonal antibody, specific for GAL1 are added to each well to “sandwich” the GAL1 immobilized on the plate. The microtiter plate undergoes incubation, and then the wells are thoroughly washed to remove all unbound components. Next, substrate solutions are added to each well. The enzyme (HRP) and substrate are allowed to react over a short incubation period. Only those wells that contain GAL1 and enzyme-conjugated antibody will exhibit a change in color. The enzyme-substrate reaction is terminated by addition of a sulphuric acid solution and the color change is measured spectrophotometrically at a wavelength of 450 nm. A standard curve is plotted relating the intensity of the color (O.D.) to the concentration of standards. The GAL1 concentration in each sample is interpolated from this standard curve.

ncbi summary :
The galectins are a family of beta-galactoside-binding proteins implicated in modulating cell-cell and cell-matrix interactions. This gene product may act as an autocrine negative growth factor that regulates cell proliferation. [provided by RefSeq, Jul 2008]
uniprot summary :
Galectin-1: May regulate apoptosis, cell proliferation and cell differentiation. Binds beta-galactoside and a wide array of complex carbohydrates. Inhibits CD45 protein phosphatase activity and therefore the dephosphorylation of Lyn kinase. Homodimer. Binds LGALS3BP. Interacts with CD2, CD3, CD4, CD7, CD43 and CD45. Interacts with laminin (via poly-N- acetyllactosamine). Expressed in placenta, maternal decidua and fetal membranes. Within placenta, expressed in trophoblasts, stromal cells, villous endothelium, syncytiotrophoblast apical membrane and villous stroma. Within fetal membranes, expressed in amnion, chorioamniotic mesenchyma and chorion. Expressed in cardiac, smooth, and skeletal muscle, neurons, thymus, kidney and hematopoietic cells. Protein type: Cell adhesion. Chromosomal Location of Human Ortholog: 22q13.1. Cellular Component: extracellular matrix; extracellular space; proteinaceous extracellular matrix; cell surface; cytoplasm; intracellular; nucleus. Molecular Function: protein binding; signal transducer activity; protein homodimerization activity; lactose binding; laminin binding; galactoside binding; glycoprotein binding. Biological Process: regulation of apoptosis; myoblast differentiation; response to drug; positive regulation of I-kappaB kinase/NF-kappaB cascade; plasma cell differentiation; apoptosis; T cell costimulation; positive regulation of erythrocyte aggregation; response to axon injury; signal transduction; multicellular organismal response to stress
