Principle of the Assay: This assay employs the quantitative sandwich enzyme immunoassay technique. Antibody specific for ITGA5 has been pre-coated onto a microplate. Standards and samples are pipetted into the wells and any ITGA5 present is bound by the immobilized antibody. After removing any unbound substances, a biotin-conjugated antibody specific for ITGA5 is added to the wells. After washing, avidin conjugated Horseradish Peroxidase (HRP) is added to the wells. Following a wash to remove any unbound avidin-enzyme reagent, a substrate solution is added to the wells and color develops in proportion to the amount of ITGA5 bound in the initial step. The color development is stopped and the intensity of the color is measured.

The product of this gene belongs to the integrin alpha chain family. Integrins are heterodimeric integral membrane proteins composed of an alpha chain and a beta chain. This gene encodes the integrin alpha 5 chain. Alpha chain 5 undergoes post-translational cleavage in the extracellular domain to yield disulfide-linked light and heavy chains that join with beta 1 to form a fibronectin receptor. In addition to adhesion, integrins are known to participate in cell-surface mediated signalling. [provided by RefSeq, Jul 2008]
