Principle of the Assay: This assay employs the quantitative sandwich enzyme immunoassay technique. Antibody specific for SLC2A5 has been pre-coated onto a microplate. Standards and samples are pipetted into the wells and any SLC2A5 present is bound by the immobilized antibody. After removing any unbound substances, a biotin-conjugated antibody specific for SLC2A5 is added to the wells. After washing, avidin conjugated Horseradish Peroxidase (HRP) is added to the wells. Following a wash to remove any unbound avidin-enzyme reagent, a substrate solution is added to the wells and color develops in proportion to the amount of SLC2A5 bound in the initial step. The color development is stopped and the intensity of the color is measured.

Function: Receptor that mediates the recognition, internalization and degradation of oxidatively modified low density lipoprotein (oxLDL) by vascular endothelial cells. OxLDL is a marker of atherosclerosis that induces vascular endothelial cell activation and dysfunction, resulting in pro-inflammatory responses, pro-oxidative conditions and apoptosis. Its association with oxLDL induces the activation of NF-kappa-B through an increased production of intracellular reactive oxygen and a variety of pro-atherogenic cellular responses including a reduction of nitric oxide (NO) release, monocyte adhesion and apoptosis.
