products description :
G-protein coupled receptor for glucagon that plays a central role in the regulation of blood glucose levels and glucose homeostasis. Regulates the rate of hepatic glucose production by promoting glycogen hydrolysis and gluconeogenesis. Plays an important role in mediating the responses to fasting. Ligand binding causes a conformation change that triggers signaling via guanine nucleotide-binding proteins (G proteins) and modulates the activity of down-stream effectors, such as adenylate cyclase. Promotes activation of adenylate cyclase. Besides, plays a role in signaling via a phosphatidylinositol-calcium second messenger system.

ncbi summary :
The protein encoded by this gene is a glucagon receptor that is important in controlling blood glucose levels. Defects in this gene are a cause of non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM).[provided by RefSeq, Jan 2010]
uniprot summary :
GCGR: This is a receptor for glucagon which plays a central role in regulating the level of blood glucose by controlling the rate of hepatic glucose production and insulin secretion. The activity of this receptor is mediated by G proteins which activate adenylyl cyclase and also a phosphatidylinositol-calcium second messenger system. Belongs to the G-protein coupled receptor 2 family. Protein type: GPCR, family 2; Membrane protein, integral; Membrane protein, multi-pass; Receptor, GPCR. Chromosomal Location of Human Ortholog: 17q25. Cellular Component: integral to membrane; integral to plasma membrane; plasma membrane. Molecular Function: glucagon receptor activity; guanyl-nucleotide exchange factor activity. Biological Process: G-protein signaling, coupled to cAMP nucleotide second messenger; generation of precursor metabolites and energy; glucose homeostasis; regulation of blood pressure; response to nutrient; response to starvation. Disease: Diabetes Mellitus, Noninsulin-dependent
