Principle of the assay: This assay employs the quantitative sandwich enzyme immunoassay technique. Antibody specific for IL-13 has been pre-coated onto a microplate. Standards and samples are pipetted into the wells with a Horseradish Peroxidase (HRP) conjugated antibody specific for IL-13. Following a wash to remove any unbound reagent, a substrate solution is added to the wells and color develops in proportion to the amount of IL-13 bound in the initial step. The color development is stopped and the intensity of the color is measured.

This gene encodes an immunoregulatory cytokine produced primarily by activated Th2 cells. This cytokine is involved in several stages of B-cell maturation and differentiation. It up-regulates CD23 and MHC class II expression, and promotes IgE isotype switching of B cells. This cytokine down-regulates macrophage activity, thereby inhibits the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines and chemokines. This cytokine is found to be critical to the pathogenesis of allergen-induced asthma but operates through mechanisms independent of IgE and eosinophils.
