Principle of the Assay This assay employs the quantitative sandwich enzyme immunoassay technique. Antibody specific for CgA has been pre-coated onto a microplate. Standards and samples are pipetted into the wells and any CgA present is bound by the immobilized antibody. After removing any unbound substances, a biotin-conjugated antibody specific for CgA is added to the wells. After washing, avidin conjugated Horseradish Peroxidase (HRP) is added to the wells. Following a wash to remove any unbound avidin-enzyme reagent, a substrate solution is added to the wells and color develops in proportion to the amount of CgA bound in the initial step. The color development is stopped and the intensity of the color is measured.

The protein encoded by this gene is a member of the chromogranin/secretogranin family of neuroendocrine secretory proteins. It is found in secretory vesicles of neurons and endocrine cells. This gene product is a precursor to three biologically active peptides; vasostatin, pancreastatin, and parastatin. These peptides act as autocrine or paracrine negative modulators of the neuroendocrine system. Other peptides, including chromostatin, beta-granin, WE-14 and GE-25, are also derived from the full-length protein. However, biological activities for these molecules have not been shown. Two transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been found for this gene. [provided by RefSeq, Sep 2014]
