Principle of the assay: This assay employs the quantitative sandwich enzyme immunoassay technique. Antibody specific for c-myc has been pre-coated onto a microplate. Standards and samples are pipetted into the wells and any c-myc present is bound by the immobilized antibody. After removing any unbound substances, a biotin-conjugated antibody specific for c-myc is added to the wells. After washing, avidin conjugated Horseradish Peroxidase (HRP) is added to the wells. Following a wash to remove any unbound avidin-enzyme reagent, a substrate solution is added to the wells and color develops in proportion to the amount of c-myc bound in the initial step. The color development is stopped and the intensity of the color is measured.

The protein encoded by this gene is a multifunctional, nuclear phosphoprotein that plays a role in cell cycle progression, apoptosis and cellular transformation. It functions as a transcription factor that regulates transcription of specific target genes. Mutations, overexpression, rearrangement and translocation of this gene have been associated with a variety of hematopoietic tumors, leukemias and lymphomas, including Burkitt lymphoma. There is evidence to show that alternative translation initiations from an upstream, in-frame non-AUG (CUG) and a downstream AUG start site result in the production of two isoforms with distinct N-termini.
