Principle of the Assay: This assay employs the quantitative sandwich enzyme immunoassay technique. Antibody specific for VEGF-B has been pre-coated onto a microplate. Standards and samples are pipetted into the wells and any VEGF-B present is bound by the immobilized antibody. After removing any unbound substances, a biotin-conjugated antibody specific for VEGF-B is added to the wells. After washing, avidin conjugated Horseradish Peroxidase (HRP) is added to the wells. Following a wash to remove any unbound avidin-enzyme reagent, a substrate solution is added to the wells and color develops in proportion to the amount of VEGF-B bound in the initial step. The color development is stopped and the intensity of the color is measured.

This gene encodes a member of the PDGF (platelet-derived growth factor)/VEGF (vascular endothelial growth factor) family. The VEGF family members regulate the formation of blood vessels and are involved in endothelial cell physiology. This member is a ligand for VEGFR-1 (vascular endothelial growth factor receptor 1) and NRP-1 (neuropilin-1). Studies in mice showed that this gene was co-expressed with nuclear-encoded mitochondrial genes and the encoded protein specifically controlled endothelial uptake of fatty acids.
