products description :
The vitamin D binding protein (DBP) is a multifunctional plasma protein that can modulate certain immune and inflammatory responses. The diverse cellular functions of DBP appear to require cell surface binding to mediate these processes. Numerous reports have detected DBP bound to the surface of several cell types and would support the concept of a cell surface binding site for DBP.

ncbi summary :
The protein encoded by this gene belongs to the albumin gene family. It is a multifunctional protein found in plasma, ascitic fluid, cerebrospinal fluid and on the surface of many cell types. It binds to vitamin D and its plasma metabolites and transports them to target tissues. Alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been found for this gene.[provided by RefSeq, Feb 2011]
uniprot summary :
GC: Multifunctional protein found in plasma, ascitic fluid, cerebrospinal fluid, and urine and on the surface of many cell types. In plasma, it carries the vitamin D sterols and prevents polymerization of actin by binding its monomers. DBP associates with membrane-bound immunoglobulin on the surface of B-lymphocytes and with IgG Fc receptor on the membranes of T-lymphocytes. Belongs to the ALB/AFP/VDB family. 2 isoforms of the human protein are produced by alternative splicing. Protein type: Secreted; Secreted, signal peptide. Chromosomal Location of Human Ortholog: 4q12-q13. Cellular Component: lysosomal lumen; extracellular space; extracellular region; cytosol. Molecular Function: vitamin D binding; actin binding; vitamin transporter activity. Biological Process: steroid metabolic process; vitamin transport; vitamin D metabolic process. Disease: Graves Disease, Susceptibility To, 1
