products description :
The NF-kappaB/Rel transcription factors are present in the cytosol in an inactive state, complexed with the inhibitory IkappaB proteins. Most agents that activate NF-kappaB do so through a common pathway based on phosphorylation-induced, proteasome-mediated degradation of IkappaB. The key regulatory step in this pathway involves activation of a high molecular weight IkappaB kinase (IKK) complex, whose catalysis is generally carried out by three tightly associated IKK subunits. IKKalpha and IKKbeta serve as the catalytic subunit of the kinase. IKKgamma serves as its regulatory subunit. Activation of IKK depends on phosphorylation, and the serines 177 and 181 in the activation loop of IKKbeta (176 and 180 in IKKalpha) are the specific sites whose phosphorylation causes a conformational change that results in kinase activation.

ncbi summary :
The protein encoded by this gene phosphorylates the inhibitor in the inhibitor/NF-kappa-B complex, causing dissociation of the inhibitor and activation of NF-kappa-B. The encoded protein itself is found in a complex of proteins. Several transcript variants, some protein-coding and some not, have been found for this gene. [provided by RefSeq, Sep 2011]
uniprot summary :
IKKB: a kinase of the IKK family. Phosphorylates inhibitors of NF-kappa-B thus leading to the dissociation of the inhibitor/NF-kappa-B complex and ultimately the degradation of the inhibitor.
