products description :
UT-A1, a kidney-specific urea transporter is expressed in the renal collecting duct where it mediates transepithelial urea transport and is a target for regulation by vasopressin. Urea movement out of the collecting duct in the inner medulla of the kidney allows accumulation of urea in the medullary interstitium, thereby allowing maximum water reabsorption from the collecting ducts. (The antibody also recognizes a second protein from the UT-A gene driven by transcription from an alternative promotor and expressed in the thin descending limb of Henle, viz. UT-A2).

ncbi summary :
The protein encoded by this gene belongs to the urea transporter family. In mammalian cells, urea is the chief end product of nitrogen catabolism, and plays an important role in the urinary concentration mechanism. This protein is expressed in the inner medulla of the kidney, and mediates rapid transepithelial urea transport across the inner medullary collecting duct. Alternatively spliced transcript variants have been found for this gene. [provided by RefSeq, Sep 2011]
uniprot summary :
SLC14A2: Specialized low-affinity vasopressin-regulated urea transporter. Mediates rapid transepithelial urea transport across the inner medullary collecting duct and plays a major role in the urinary concentrating mechanism. Belongs to the urea transporter family. 2 isoforms of the human protein are produced by alternative splicing. Protein type: Transporter; Transporter, SLC family; Membrane protein, multi-pass; Membrane protein, integral. Chromosomal Location of Human Ortholog: 18q12.1-q21.1. Cellular Component: membrane; apical plasma membrane; integral to membrane; plasma membrane.
