Clostridium tetani is a gram-positive, motile bacteria found in soil and animal feces. C. tetani produces the potent exotoxin which causes tetanus (lockjaw) in humans. The toxin blocks the activity of inhibitory interneurons leading to chronic muscle contraction, which can eventually cause respiratory failure. Tetanus toxoid is often used as a carrier for other compounds with poor immunogenicity.
