products description :
The binding region of Uroplakin III has been localized on the extracellular part of the antigen. Together with the uroplakins UP Ia, UP Ib and UP II, uroplakin III contributes in constituting the asymmetrical unit membrane of the plaques of urothelial superficial (umbrella) cells. Uroplakin is a membrane glycoprotein (47kD) and has been shown to be a specific marker of terminal urothelial differentiation (Wu et al., 1993, 1994). About 60% of human transitional cell carcinomas (including metastases) maintain focal (sometimes very limited) expression of uroplakin III. Until now, no uroplakin staining has been found in any non-urothelial carcinoma (Moll et al., 1995). Uroplakin III may thus serve as a specific urothelial differentiation marker in cases of metastatic carcinomas with unclear primary tumor.

ncbi summary :
This gene encodes a member of the uroplakin family, a group of transmembrane proteins that form complexes on the apical surface of the bladder epithelium. Mutations in this gene may be associated with renal adysplasia. Alternatively spliced transcript variants have been described.[provided by RefSeq, Nov 2009]
uniprot summary :
Function: Component of the asymmetric unit membrane (AUM); a highly specialized biomembrane elaborated by terminally differentiated urothelial cells. May play an important role in AUM-cytoskeleton interaction in terminally differentiated urothelial cells. It also contributes to the formation of urothelial glycocalyx which may play an important role in preventing bacterial adherence . By similarity. Subunit structure: Heterodimer with uroplakin-1B (UPK1B) . By similarity. Subcellular location: Endoplasmic reticulum membrane; Single-pass type I membrane protein . By similarity. Note: Heterodimer formation with UPK1B is a prerequisite to exit out of the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) . By similarity. Tissue specificity: Expressed in ureter. Ref.6. Involvement in disease: Renal adysplasia (RADYS) [MIM:191830]: Renal agenesis refers to the absence of one (unilateral) or both (bilateral) kidneys at birth. Bilateral renal agenesis belongs to a group of perinatally lethal renal diseases, including severe bilateral renal dysplasia, unilateral renal agenesis with contralateral dysplasia and severe obstructive uropathy.Note: The disease is caused by mutations affecting the gene represented in this entry. Ref.7 Ref.8. Sequence similarities: Belongs to the uroplakin-3 family.
