products description :
SNAP 25 (synaptosome-associated protein of 25kD) is a highly conserved protein anchored to the cytosolic face of membranes via palmitoyl side chains in the middle of the molecule. SNAP 25 is the target of Botulinum neurotoxin A and E which cleave off 9 and 26aas, respectively, from the C-terminus. The protein is part of the exocytotic fusion complex (v-SNARE) of neurons where it assembles with syntaxin 1 and synaptobrevin/VAMP. The protein is abundantly localized on the neuronal plasmalemma and on recycling vesicles including synaptic vesicles. It is also expressed in neuroendocrine cells.

ncbi summary :
Synaptic vesicle membrane docking and fusion is mediated by SNAREs (soluble N-ethylmaleimide-sensitive factor attachment protein receptors) located on the vesicle membrane (v-SNAREs) and the target membrane (t-SNAREs). The assembled v-SNARE/t-SNARE complex consists of a bundle of four helices, one of which is supplied by v-SNARE and the other three by t-SNARE. For t-SNAREs on the plasma membrane, the protein syntaxin supplies one helix and the protein encoded by this gene contributes the other two. Therefore, this gene product is a presynaptic plasma membrane protein. It is essential for regulated exocytosis in neuronal cells. Alternative transcript variants encoding two different protein isoforms have been described for this gene. [provided by RefSeq, Jul 2012]
