products description :
Principle of the Assay: The principle of the double antibody sandwich ELISA is represented in Figure 1. In this assay the Alpha 1-Acid Glycoprotein present in samples reacts with the anti-Alpha 1-Acid Glycoprotein antibodies which have been adsorbed to the surface of polystyrene microtitre wells. After the removal of unbound proteins by washing, anti-AGP antibodies conjugated with horseradish peroxidase (HRP), are added. These enzyme-labeled antibodies form complexes with the previously bound AGP. Following another washing step, the enzyme bound to the immunosorbent is assayed by the addition of a chromogenic substrate, 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB). The quantity of bound enzyme varies directly with the concentration of AGP in the sample tested; thus, the absorbance, at 450 nm, is a measure of the concentration of AGP in the test sample. The quantity of AGP in the test sample can be interpolated from the standard curve constructed from the standards, and corrected for sample dilution. Background: Acute phase proteins are plasma proteins which increase in concentration following infection, inflammation or trauma. The first acute phase protein to be recognized was discovered in humans by Tillet and Frances in 19301. Alpha-1-glycoprotein (AGP) is a major acute phase reactant, both in man and in rat. Its concentration in blood plasma is elevated during acute inflammation, such as rheumatoid arthritis, bacterial infections, etc, and can be used for the diagnosis of inflammatory conditions.

ncbi summary :
an acute phase reactant protein; may have a role in the acute inflammation response [RGD, Feb 2006]
uniprot summary :
ORM1: Functions as transport protein in the blood stream. Binds various ligands in the interior of its beta-barrel domain. Also binds synthetic drugs and influences their distribution and availability in the body. Appears to function in modulating the activity of the immune system during the acute-phase reaction. Belongs to the calycin superfamily. Lipocalin family. Protein type: Secreted, signal peptide; Secreted. Cellular Component: extracellular space. Molecular Function: drug binding. Biological Process: response to drug; organ regeneration; response to vitamin E; regulation of immune system process; transport; acute-phase response; response to lipopolysaccharide; chronic inflammatory response to antigenic stimulus; response to organic cyclic substance; acute inflammatory response to antigenic stimulus
