products description :
Principle of the Assay: The principle of the double antibody sandwich ELISA is represented in Figure 1. In this assay the Myoglobin present in samples reacts with the anti-Myoglobin antibodies which have been adsorbed to the surface of polystyrene microtitre wells. After the removal of unbound proteins by washing, anti-Myoglobin antibodies conjugated with horseradish peroxidase (HRP), are added. These enzyme-labeled antibodies form complexes with the previously bound Myoglobin. Following another washing step, the enzyme bound to the immunosorbent is assayed by the addition of a chromogenic substrate, 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB). The quantity of bound enzyme varies directly with the concentration of Myoglobin in the sample tested; thus, the absorbance, at 450 nm, is a measure of the concentration of Myoglobin in the test sample. The quantity of Myoglobin in the test sample can be interpolated from the standard curve constructed from the standards, and corrected for sample dilution. Background: Myoglobin is a single-chain globular protein with a molecular weight of 16,700 daltons. It contains a heme prosthetic group in the center and is the primary oxygen-carrying pigment of muscle tissues. Myoglobin is released from damaged muscle tissue which is filtered by the kidney. therefore is a sensitive marker for muscle injury.

ncbi summary :
This gene encodes a member of the globin superfamily and is expressed in skeletal and cardiac muscles. The encoded protein is a haemoprotein contributing to intracellular oxygen storage and transcellular facilitated diffusion of oxygen. At least three alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding the same protein have been reported. [provided by RefSeq]
