products description :
Platelet endothelial cell adhesion molecule (PECAM-1, CD31) is a 130 kD glycoprotein that is constitutively expressed by endothelial cells and by platelets, neutrophils, monocytes, and some T- lymphocytes. It is an integral transmembrane protein that belongs to the immunoglobulin superfamily and that mediates both homotypic and heterotypic cell adhesion. These functions have implicated CD31 in a variety of important biological processes including inflammation, angiogenesis and wound healing. In particular, CD31 has an important role in neutrophil and monocyte emigration across vascular endothelium, processes that can be inhibited, both in vitro and in vivo, with anti-CD31 antibodies.

ncbi summary :
The protein encoded by this gene is found on the surface of platelets, monocytes, neutrophils, and some types of T-cells, and makes up a large portion of endothelial cell intercellular junctions. The encoded protein is a member of the immunoglobulin superfamily and is likely involved in leukocyte migration, angiogenesis, and integrin activation. [provided by RefSeq, May 2010]
