Immunogen: Synthetic peptide taken within amino acid region 50-100 on human glial fibrillary acidic protein.
products description :
Glial fibrillary acidic protein, or GFAP, is an intermediate filament(IF) protein belongin to the type III subclass of IF protein. Like other IF proteins, GFAP is coposed of an amino-terminal head domain, a central rod domain and a carboxy-terminal tail domain. GFAP is specifically found in astroglia, a cell type which is higly responsive to neurologic insults. Astrogliosis is found to be result of mechanical trauma,AIDS dementia, prion infection and inflammatory demylination diseases, and is accompanied by an increase in GFAP EXPRESSION, GFAP is an immunohistochemical marker for localizing bening astrocyte and neoplastic cells of glian origin in the central nervous system. Glial cells are responsible for mantaining brain homeostasis.Modification of the viability and fuctionsof glial cells, including astrocytes and microglia, are associated with neuronal death and neurological diseases. GFAP-selective antibodies were generated against a peptide taken the C-terminal region of the human GFAP protein. The GFAP-selective antibodies are affinity purified of an immobilized antigen based affinity matrix, the isolated antibodies are fully characterized for applications in western blotting and ELISA at the recommended dilutions. Western blot positive control(PC-GFAP)and antigenic blocking peptides(P-GFAP)for GFAP are available. Antibodies can be conjugated to flurophores or other secondary enzymes upon request as an additional service.

uniprot summary :
GFAP: a class-III intermediate filament protein. A cell-specific marker that, during the development of the central nervous system, distinguishes astrocytes from other glial cells. Mutations in this gene cause Alexander disease, a rare disorder of astrocytes in the central nervous system. An additional transcript variant isoform has been described, but its full length sequence has not been determined. Protein type: Cytoskeletal. Chromosomal Location of Human Ortholog: 17q21. Cellular Component: cytoplasm; cytosol; intermediate filament; intermediate filament cytoskeleton; lysosome; membrane; myelin sheath. Molecular Function: glycoprotein binding; integrin binding; kinase binding; protein binding; structural constituent of cytoskeleton. Biological Process: astrocyte development; Bergmann glial cell differentiation; extracellular matrix organization and biogenesis; intermediate filament organization; neurite regeneration; regulation of neurotransmitter uptake; regulation of protein complex assembly; response to wounding. Disease: Alexander Disease
