Protein Type: Recombinant. Biological Significance: IL6 mediates its biological effects through the type I IL6 receptor system that consists of two chains, IL6Ra and gp130. The IL6Ra chain is the binding component specific to IL6; while the gp130 only transmits signals of IL6 when bound to IL6Ra. The gp130 also can transmit signals from LIF, OSM, CNTF, IL11 and CT-1 in conjunction with other receptor subunits. The low-affinity binding site for IL6 is composed of IL6Ra alone. IL6Ra is expressed in a wide range of cells including T cells, fibroblasts and macrophages. Soluble IL6Ra which consists of only the extracellular domain of the IL6Ra chain, acts as an agonist of IL6 activity at low concentrations. Bioactivity: The ED50 was determined by its ability to intensify the IL-6 induced growth inhibition of Mouse M1 cells is approximately 5.0 ng/ml, in the presence of 20 ng/ml of rhIL-6. Endotoxin Levels: Endotoxin level is less than 0.1 ng per ug (1 EU/ug).

This gene encodes a subunit of the interleukin 6 (IL6) receptor complex. Interleukin 6 is a potent pleiotropic cytokine that regulates cell growth and differentiation and plays an important role in the immune response. The IL6 receptor is a protein complex consisting of this protein and interleukin 6 signal transducer (IL6ST/GP130/IL6-beta), a receptor subunit also shared by many other cytokines. Dysregulated production of IL6 and this receptor are implicated in the pathogenesis of many diseases, such as multiple myeloma, autoimmune diseases and prostate cancer. Alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding distinct isoforms have been reported. A pseudogene of this gene is found on chromosome 9.[provided by RefSeq, May 2011]
