other info1 :
Biological Significance: CD9 antigen is a protein that in humans is encoded by the CD9 gene. The protein encoded by this gene is a member of the transmembrane 4 superfamily, also known as the tetraspanin family. Most of these members are cell-surface proteins that are characterized by the presence of four hydrophobic domains. The proteins mediate signal transduction events that play a role in the regulation of cell development, activation, growth and motility.
other info2 :
Immunogen: CD9 antibody was raised in mouse using human CD9 as the immunogen.

ncbi summary :
This gene encodes a member of the transmembrane 4 superfamily, also known as the tetraspanin family. Tetraspanins are cell surface glycoproteins with four transmembrane domains that form multimeric complexes with other cell surface proteins. The encoded protein functions in many cellular processes including differentiation, adhesion, and signal transduction, and expression of this gene plays a critical role in the suppression of cancer cell motility and metastasis. [provided by RefSeq, Jan 2011]
uniprot summary :
CD9: Involved in platelet activation and aggregation. Regulates paranodal junction formation. Involved in cell adhesion, cell motility and tumor metastasis. Required for sperm-egg fusion. Belongs to the tetraspanin (TM4SF) family. Protein type: Cell adhesion; Membrane protein, integral; Membrane protein, multi-pass; Motility/polarity/chemotaxis. Chromosomal Location of Human Ortholog: 12p13.3. Cellular Component: extracellular space; platelet alpha granule membrane; focal adhesion; integral to plasma membrane; apical plasma membrane; plasma membrane; vesicle; external side of plasma membrane.
