other info1 :
Biological Significance: Interferons (IFNs) are proteins made and released by lymphocytes in response to the presence of pathogens-such as viruses, bacteria, or parasites-or tumor cells. They allow communication between cells to trigger the protective defenses of the immune system that eradicate pathogens or tumors.

ncbi summary :
The protein encoded by this gene is a type I membrane protein that forms one of the two chains of a receptor for interferons alpha and beta. Binding and activation of the receptor stimulates Janus protein kinases, which in turn phosphorylate several proteins, including STAT1 and STAT2. The encoded protein also functions as an antiviral factor. [provided by RefSeq, Jul 2008]
uniprot summary :
IFNAR1: receptor for interferons alpha and beta. Belongs to the type II cytokine family of receptors. Binding to type I IFNs triggers tyrosine phosphorylation of a number of proteins including JAKs, TYK2, STAT proteins and IFNR alpha- and beta-subunits themselves. Tyk2 tyrosine kinase is essential for stable cell surface expression of IFNAR1. Present in all tissues and even on the surface of most IFN-resistant cells. Protein type: Membrane protein, integral; Receptor, cytokine. Chromosomal Location of Human Ortholog: 21q22.11. Cellular Component: integral to plasma membrane; integral to membrane; plasma membrane. Molecular Function: protein binding; interferon receptor activity; interferon-alpha/beta receptor activity. Biological Process: positive regulation of interferon-gamma production; cell surface receptor linked signal transduction; T cell activation; cytokine and chemokine mediated signaling pathway; response to virus; positive regulation of interleukin-1 beta secretion; interferon type I biosynthetic process; JAK-STAT cascade; defense response to virus
