Biological Significance: Carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) describes a set of highly related glycoproteins involved in cell adhesion. CEA is normally produced in gastrointestinal tissue during fetal development, but the production stops before birth. In adults, CEA elevation is used as a tumor marker. Implications in Disease: CEA is a protein normally found in the tissue of a developing baby in the womb. The blood level of this protein disappears or becomes very low after birth and so if elevated in adults, it can be indicative of cancer.
