Species Reactivity Note: The antibody has been directly tested for reactivity in rat and mouse. Other species have not yet been tested. Biological Significance: Olig genes have been identified as the earliest known markers of oligodendrocyte lineage determination to date (Zhou et al., 2000). Olig1 is a transcription factor which promotes formation and maturation of oligodendrocytes, especially within the brain. It is expressed in the ventral spinal cord as early as 9.5 dpc and by 15.5 dpc, olig1 is dispersed throughout the gray matter. In the postnatal brain, it is present preferentially in the white matter, such as corpus callosum and cerebellar medulla. Olig1 has been demonstrated as necessary in the repair of brain lesions in patients with multiple sclerosis (Arnett et al. 2004).

uniprot summary :
Function: Promotes formation and maturation of oligodendrocytes, especially within the brain. Cooperates with OLIG2 to establish the pMN domain of the embryonic neural tube. Ref.5. Subcellular location: Nucleus . By similarity. Tissue specificity: Expressed specifically in brain. Ref.1. Developmental stage: Expressed in the ventral spinal cord as early as 9.5 dpc. Expression declines to undetectable levels by 10.5 dpc and reappears in a narrow zone within the ventral neuroepithelium of the spinal cord. In the 14.5 dpc spinal cord, expressed in the oligodendrocyte progenitors of the ventral ventricular zone, but not dorsal root ganglia Schwann cells. Also expressed scattered in the mantle zone, likely corresponding to oligodendrocyte progenitors migrating out from their site of origin. By 15.5 dpc, dispersed throughout the gray matter, with little or no residual expression in the ventricular zone. In the postnatal brain, present preferentially in the white matter, such as corpus callosum and cerebellar medulla. Expressed in the olfactory epithelium from 11.5dpc onward. Ref.3. Induction: By SHH. Ref.4. Sequence similarities: Contains 1 bHLH (basic helix-loop-helix) domain. Sequence caution: The sequence BAB18906.1 differs from that shown. Reason: Erroneous initiation.
