products description :
Cytokines induce a variety of biological responses by binding to specific cell surface receptors and activating cytoplasmic signal transduction pathways which are suppressed by other transcriptional factors. Proteins that mediate these signals from the cell surface to the nucleus include JAKs and STATs, while SOCS (Suppressor of cytokine signaling) proteins inhibit those signaling. The SOCS family comprises at least 8 members, SOCS1 to SOCS7 and CIS (cytokine inducible SH2 containing protein). Structurally, the SOCS proteins are composed of an N terminal region of variable length and amino acid composition, a central SH2 domain, and a previously unrecognized C terminal motif named the SOCS box. SOCS 2 is considered to regulate postnatal growth, such as GH/IGF-1 pathway.

ncbi summary :
This gene encodes a member of the STAT-induced STAT inhibitor (SSI), also known as suppressor of cytokine signaling (SOCS), family. SSI family members are cytokine-inducible negative regulators of cytokine signaling. The expression of this gene can be induced by a subset of cytokines, including erythropoietin, GM-CSF, IL10 and interferon (IFN)-gamma. The protein encoded by this gene is found to interact with the cytoplasmic domain of insulin-like growth factor-1 receptor (IGF1R), and thus is thought to be involved in the regulation of IGF1R mediated cell signaling. Knockout studies in mice also suggested a regulatory role of this gene in IGF-1 related growth control. [provided by RefSeq]
uniprot summary :
Function: SOCS family proteins form part of a classical negative feedback system that regulates cytokine signal transduction. SOCS2 appears to be a negative regulator in the growth hormone/IGF1 signaling pathway. Probable substrate recognition component of a SCF-like ECS (Elongin BC-CUL2/5-SOCS-box protein) E3 ubiquitin-protein ligase complex which mediates the ubiquitination and subsequent proteasomal degradation of target proteins. Pathway: Protein modification; protein ubiquitination. Subunit structure: Interacts with IGF1 receptor, prolactin receptor and growth hormone (GH) receptor. Associates with the Elongin BC complex. Tissue specificity: High expression in heart, placenta, lung, kidney and prostate. Induction: By a subset of cytokines, including EPO/erythropoietin and CSF2/GM-CSF. Domain: The SOCS box domain mediates the interaction with the Elongin BC complex, an adapter module in different E3 ubiquitin ligase complexes. Sequence similarities: Contains 1 SH2 domain.Contains 1 SOCS box domain.
