Interleukin-18 is a pleiotropic cytokine, which has been identified as a co-stimulatory factor for interferon gamma. IL-18 is produced primarily by activated blood monocytes and tissue macrophages and is thought to play an important role in the development of T helper type 1 cells which are required for cell-mediated immune response. Our recombinant IL-18 comprises a 157 amino acid fragment (37-193) corresponding to the mature IL-18 protein and is expressed in E. coli with an amino-terminal hexahistidine tag. This product is for research use only and is not intended for diagnostic or therapeutic use.

The protein encoded by this gene is a proinflammatory cytokine. This cytokine can induce the IFN-gamma production of T cells. The combination of this cytokine and IL12 has been shown to inhibit IL4 dependent IgE and IgG1 production, and enhance IgG2a production of B cells. IL-18 binding protein (IL18BP) can specifically interact with this cytokine, and thus negatively regulate its biological activity. [provided by RefSeq]
