products description :
Tissue polypeptide specific antigen was first identified as a Tumor marker in the late 1950's, and has recently been shown to be closely related to human cytokeratin 18. Cytokeratins are a group of about 20 cytoskeletal proteins, whose degradation gives rise to soluble fragments, measurable in the blood of patients. Serum levels are high in breast cancer patients and also some other malignancies, probably due to high cell turnover in Tumors. Recombinant human CK-18 is expressed in E Coli with an amino-terminal hexahistidine tag. This product is not intended for therapeutic use.

ncbi summary :
KRT18 encodes the type I intermediate filament chain keratin 18. Keratin 18, together with its filament partner keratin 8, are perhaps the most commonly found members of the intermediate filament gene family. They are expressed in single layer epithelial tissues of the body. Mutations in this gene have been linked to cryptogenic cirrhosis. Two transcript variants encoding the same protein have been found for this gene. [provided by RefSeq, Jul 2008]
uniprot summary :
K18: a type I cytoskeletal keratin. The keratins are intermediate filament proteins responsible for the structural integrity of epithelial cells and are subdivided into cytokeratins and hair keratins. Keratin 18 and its filament partner keratin 8 are perhaps the most commonly found members of the intermediate filament gene family. They are expressed in single layer epithelial tissues of the body. Defects are a cause of cryptogenic cirrhosis. Protein type: Cytoskeletal; Nucleolus. Chromosomal Location of Human Ortholog: 12q13. Cellular Component: cytoplasm; intermediate filament; keratin filament; microtubule organizing center. Molecular Function: protein binding. Biological Process: anatomical structure morphogenesis; Golgi to plasma membrane CFTR protein transport; intermediate filament cytoskeleton organization and biogenesis; negative regulation of apoptosis. Disease: Cirrhosis, Familial
