products description :
IL17A, also named as IL-17, is a proinflammatory cytokine. IL-17,synthesized only by memory T cells and natural killer cells, has pleiotropic effects, mainly in the recruitment and activation of neutrophils. This cytokine regulates the activities of NF-kappaB and mitogenactivated protein kinases. This cytokine can stimulate the expression of IL6 and cyclooxygenase-2 (PTGS2/COX-2),as well as enhance the production of nitric oxide (NO). High levels of this cytokine are associated with several chronic inflammatory diseases including rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis and multiple sclerosis. The IL-17 receptor is a type I transmembrane protein, that is widely expressed on epithelial cells, fibroblasts,B and T cells, and monocytic cells. In psoriatic skin lesions, both Th17 cells and their downstream effector molecules,e.g. IL-17 and IL-22,are highly increased.

ncbi summary :
This gene encodes a pro-inflammatory cytokine that is a member of the interleukin-17 family. The encoded protein plays a central role in host defense against diverse pathogens. The encoded protein is produced by activated T-cells and certain cell types of innate immune system. The active protein functions as either a homodimer with other interleukin-17 family members and signals through the interleukin-17 receptor to induce inflammatory cytokine production. Aberrant expression of this gene is associated with autoinflammatory diseases including rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis and multiple sclerosis. [provided by RefSeq, Sep 2015]
uniprot summary :
Ligand for IL17RA (PubMed:17911633). The heterodimer formed by IL17A and IL17F is a ligand for the heterodimeric complex formed by IL17RA and IL17RC (). Involved in inducing stromal cells to produce proinflammatory and hematopoietic cytokines ().
