products description :
Adaptor protein (AP) complexes are cytosolic heterotetramers that mediate the sorting of membrane proteins in the secretory and endocytic pathways. AP3D1 is a subunit of the AP-3 complex which is composed of two large adaptins (AP3D1 and AP3B1 or AP3B2), a medium adaptin (AP3M1 or AP3M2) and a small adaptin (APS1 or AP3S2). AP-3 complex is associated with the Golgi region as well as more peripheral structures. It facilitates the budding of vesicles from the Golgi membrane and may be directly involved in trafficking to lysosomes.

ncbi summary :
The protein encoded by this gene is a subunit of the AP3 adaptor-like complex, which is not clathrin-associated, but is associated with the golgi region, as well as more peripheral structures. The AP-3 complex facilitates the budding of vesicles from the golgi membrane, and may be directly involved in trafficking to lysosomes. This subunit is implicated in intracellular biogenesis and trafficking of pigment granules, and possibly platelet dense granules and neurotransmitter vesicles. Alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been found for this gene. [provided by RefSeq, Sep 2011]
uniprot summary :
AP3D1: Part of the AP-3 complex, an adaptor-related complex which is not clathrin-associated. The complex is associated with the Golgi region as well as more peripheral structures. It facilitates the budding of vesicles from the Golgi membrane and may be directly involved in trafficking to lysosomes. Belongs to the adaptor complexes large subunit family. 5 isoforms of the human protein are produced by alternative splicing. Protein type: Adaptor/scaffold. Chromosomal Location of Human Ortholog: 19p13.3. Cellular Component: Golgi membrane; nucleoplasm; Golgi apparatus; membrane coat; membrane; lysosomal membrane; terminal button; endosome membrane. Molecular Function: transporter activity. Biological Process: intracellular protein transport; protein localization in organelle; melanosome organization and biogenesis; anterograde synaptic vesicle transport; antigen processing and presentation, exogenous lipid antigen via MHC class Ib; synaptic vesicle membrane organization and biogenesis; positive regulation of NK T cell differentiation; anterograde axon cargo transport; eye pigment biosynthetic process
