products description :
Myoglobin is a heme containing oxygen carrier that stores oxygen in muscles. It consists of a single polypeptide chain with a molecular weight of 16,000Da. Sequence analysis shows that it is structurally related to haemoglobin. Following myocardial infraction myoglobin is lost from cardiac muscle cells and its presence in serum may be used as a diagnostic indicator.

ncbi summary :
This gene encodes a member of the globin superfamily and is expressed in skeletal and cardiac muscles. The encoded protein is a haemoprotein contributing to intracellular oxygen storage and transcellular facilitated diffusion of oxygen. At least three alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding the same protein have been reported. [provided by RefSeq, Jul 2008]
