Human Low-density lipoprotein (LDL) refers to a class and range of lipoprotein particles, varying in their size which carry cholesterol in the blood and around the body, for use by cells. Human Low Density Lipoprotein contains apolipoprotein B-100. Generally, Human LDL transports cholesterol and triglycerides from the liver and small intestine to cells and tissues which are taking up cholesterol and triglycerides.

The protein encoded by this gene is an endocytic receptor involved in several cellular processes, including intracellular signaling, lipid homeostasis, and clearance of apoptotic cells. In addition, the encoded protein is necessary for the A2M-mediated clearance of secreted amyloid precursor protein and beta-amyloid, the main component of amyloid plaques found in Alzheimer patients.
