products description :
MyBioSource is the leading manufacturer of human serum Heptoglobin for research and diagnostic manufacturing. Custom preparations, technical support, bulk quantities and aliquoting available. Haptoglobin is a protein in the blood plasma that binds free hemoglobin released from erythrocytes with high affinity and thereby inhibits its oxidative activity. The haptoglobin-hemoglobin complex will then be removed by the reticuloendothelial system (mostly the spleen) and is a serum protein that consists of two alpha and two beta chains connected by disulfide bridges. It acts as a hemoglobin scavenger and has been associated with protease inhibitory activity. Human Haptoglobin is a positive acute phase reactant, the levels of which increase significantly in human(s) in response to inflammation, tissue injury or disease.

ncbi summary :
This gene encodes a haptoglobin-related protein that binds hemoglobin as efficiently as haptoglobin. Unlike haptoglobin, plasma concentration of this protein is unaffected in patients with sickle cell anemia and extensive intravascular hemolysis, suggesting a difference in binding between haptoglobin-hemoglobin and haptoglobin-related protein-hemoglobin complexes to CD163, the hemoglobin scavenger receptor. This protein may also be a clinically important predictor of recurrence of breast cancer. [provided by RefSeq, Oct 2011]
