products description :
Introduction: TUBB2B is a beta isoform of tubulin, which binds GTP and is a major component of microtubules. Numerous beta Tubulin isoforms have been characterized and are expressed in mammalian tissues. Tubulin binds two moles of GTP, one at an exchangeable site on the beta chain and one at a non-exchangeable site on the alpha-chain. TUBB2b is mostly expressed in developing neurons with a dominant expression during the critical steps of corticogenesis. In addition, TUBB2B is a new critical gene involved in neuronal migration. TUBB2B is present in the nuclei and nucleoplasm, Defects in the TUBB2B gene are a cause of asymmetric polymicrogyria.

ncbi summary :
The protein encoded by this gene is a beta isoform of tubulin, which binds GTP and is a major component of microtubules. This gene is highly similar to TUBB2A and TUBB2C. Defects in this gene are a cause of asymmetric polymicrogyria. [provided by RefSeq, Mar 2010]
uniprot summary :
TUBB2B: Tubulin is the major constituent of microtubules. It binds two moles of GTP, one at an exchangeable site on the beta chain and one at a non-exchangeable site on the alpha-chain. TUBB2B is implicated in neuronal migration. Defects in TUBB2B are a cause of polymicrogyria asymmetric (PMGA). PMGA is a malformation of the cortex in which the brain surface is irregular and characterized by an excessive number of small gyri with abnormal lamination. Belongs to the tubulin family. Protein type: Cytoskeletal. Chromosomal Location of Human Ortholog: 6p25. Cellular Component: microtubule; cytoplasm; nucleus. Molecular Function: GTPase activity; protein binding; GTP binding; structural constituent of cytoskeleton. Biological Process: protein polymerization; de novo posttranslational protein folding; cellular protein metabolic process; protein folding; neuron migration; transmembrane transport; microtubule-based process. Disease: Polymicrogyria, Symmetric Or Asymmetric
