products description :
CD33 is a type I transmembrane glycoprotein that is found on granulocyte and macrophage precursors in the bone marrow, but is absent from pluripotent stem cells. CD33 is also expressed on monocytes in peripheral blood. It is used as a marker to distinguish myelogenous leukemia cells from lymphoid or erythroid leukemias. CD33 may function as a sialic acid-dependent cell adhesion molecule.

Calculated MW: 25kDa/33kDa/39kDa. Observed MW: 67kDa
ncbi pathways :
Hematopoietic Cell Lineage Pathway (83078); Hematopoietic Cell Lineage Pathway (489)
uniprot summary :
CD33: Putative adhesion molecule of myelomonocytic-derived cells that mediates sialic-acid dependent binding to cells. Preferentially binds to alpha-2,6-linked sialic acid. The sialic acid recognition site may be masked by cis interactions with sialic acids on the same cell surface. In the immune response, may act as an inhibitory receptor upon ligand induced tyrosine phosphorylation by recruiting cytoplasmic phosphatase(s) via their SH2 domain(s) that block signal transduction through dephosphorylation of signaling molecules. Induces apoptosis in acute myeloid leukemia (in vitro). Belongs to the immunoglobulin superfamily. SIGLEC (sialic acid binding Ig-like lectin) family. Protein type: Membrane protein, integral; Cell adhesion. Chromosomal Location of Human Ortholog: 19q13.3. Cellular Component: integral to plasma membrane; plasma membrane; external side of plasma membrane. Molecular Function: protein binding; receptor activity; carbohydrate binding. Biological Process: negative regulation of cell proliferation; cell-cell signaling; signal transduction; cell adhesion
