ncbi summary :
This gene encodes one subunit of a trimeric complex forming a highly conserved transcription factor that binds with high specificity to CCAAT motifs in the promoters of a variety of genes. The encoded protein, subunit C, forms a tight dimer with the B subunit, a prerequisite for subunit A association. The resulting trimer binds to DNA with high specificity and affinity. Subunits B and C each contain a histone-like motif. Multiple transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been found for this gene. [provided by RefSeq, Dec 2008]
uniprot summary :
NFYC: Stimulates the transcription of various genes by recognizing and binding to a CCAAT motif in promoters, for example in type 1 collagen, albumin and beta-actin genes. Belongs to the NFYC/HAP5 subunit family. 6 isoforms of the human protein are produced by alternative splicing. Protein type: DNA-binding; Transcription factor. Chromosomal Location of Human Ortholog: 1p32. Cellular Component: nucleoplasm; CCAAT-binding factor complex; nucleus. Molecular Function: protein binding; DNA binding; protein heterodimerization activity; sequence-specific DNA binding; transcription coactivator activity; transcription factor activity; transcription factor binding. Biological Process: regulation of transcription from RNA polymerase II promoter; regulation of transcription, DNA-dependent; protein folding; transcription, DNA-dependent; positive regulation of transcription, DNA-dependent; cellular lipid metabolic process
