ncbi summary :
This gene encodes a small salivary mucin, which is thought to play a role in facilitating the clearance of bacteria in the oral cavity and to aid in mastication, speech, and swallowing. The central domain of this glycoprotein contains tandem repeats, each composed of 23 amino acids. The most common allele contains 6 repeats, and some alleles may be associated with susceptibility to asthma. Alternatively spliced transcript variants with different 5' UTR, but encoding the same protein, have been found for this gene.[provided by RefSeq, Feb 2009]
uniprot summary :
MUC7: May function in a protective capacity by promoting the clearance of bacteria in the oral cavity and aiding in mastication, speech, and swallowing. Binds P.aeruginosa pili. Genetic variations in MUC7 are associated with susceptibility to asthma (ASTHMA). The most common chronic disease affecting children and young adults. It is a complex genetic disorder with a heterogeneous phenotype, largely attributed to the interactions among many genes and between these genes and the environment. It is characterized by recurrent attacks of paroxysmal dyspnea, with weezing due to spasmodic contraction of the bronchi. Protein type: Secreted, signal peptide; Secreted. Chromosomal Location of Human Ortholog: 4q13.3. Cellular Component: Golgi lumen. Molecular Function: protein binding. Biological Process: protein amino acid O-linked glycosylation; cellular protein metabolic process; O-glycan processing; post-translational protein modification. Disease: Asthma, Susceptibility To
