ncbi summary :
The bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs) are a family of secreted signaling molecules that can induce ectopic bone growth. Many BMPs are part of the transforming growth factor-beta (TGFB) superfamily. BMPs were originally identified by an ability of demineralized bone extract to induce endochondral osteogenesis in vivo in an extraskeletal site. Based on its expression early in embryogenesis, the BMP encoded by this gene has a proposed role in early development and possible bone inductive activity. [provided by RefSeq, Jul 2008]
uniprot summary :
BMP7: Induces cartilage and bone formation. May be the osteoinductive factor responsible for the phenomenon of epithelial osteogenesis. Plays a role in calcium regulation and bone homeostasis. Homodimer; disulfide-linked. Interacts with SOSTDC1. Interacts with TWSG1. Expressed in the kidney and bladder. Lower levels seen in the brain. Belongs to the TGF-beta family. Protein type: Secreted; Secreted, signal peptide. Chromosomal Location of Human Ortholog: 20q13. Cellular Component: extracellular matrix; extracellular space; extracellular region. Molecular Function: heparin binding; protein binding; growth factor activity; cytokine activity; transforming growth factor beta receptor binding. Biological Process: axon guidance; negative regulation of MAP kinase activity; response to peptide hormone stimulus; extracellular matrix organization and biogenesis; positive regulation of apoptosis; positive regulation of transcription, DNA-dependent; negative regulation of NF-kappaB import into nucleus; embryonic pattern specification; response to estradiol stimulus; negative regulation of cell cycle; BMP signaling pathway; regulation of apoptosis; response to vitamin D; epithelial cell differentiation; ureteric bud development; dendrite development; mesonephros development; skeletal development; embryonic limb morphogenesis; ossification; positive regulation of heterotypic cell-cell adhesion; positive regulation of bone mineralization; odontogenesis of dentine-containing teeth; positive regulation of osteoblast differentiation; negative regulation of neuron differentiation; mesenchymal cell differentiation; mesoderm formation; branching morphogenesis of a tube; inhibition of NF-kappaB transcription factor; cartilage development; negative regulation of mitosis; negative regulation of Notch signaling pathway; epithelial to mesenchymal transition; negative regulation of phosphorylation; positive regulation of transcription from RNA polymerase II promoter; steroid hormone mediated signaling; embryonic camera-type eye morphogenesis; negative regulation of transcription, DNA-dependent; metanephros development; neurite morphogenesis; growth
