CCN1's gene-regulatory effects are heparin-binding dependent. Additionally, it exerts regulatory control by down-regulating the expression of collagen type-1 subunits alpha-1 and alpha-2. The protein facilitates cell adhesion and signaling through integrin alpha-6/beta-1, promotes cell migration via integrin alpha-v/beta-5, and stimulates cell proliferation through integrin alpha-v/beta-3. Its interactions with integrins are context-dependent, relying on heparin and the specific cell type.
