KCRM is a cytoplasmic creatine kinase isoenzyme responsible for participating in energy transduction and maintaining energy homeostasis. KCRM is a cytoplasmic creatine kinase isoenzyme that reversibly catalyzes phosphate transfer between ATP and various phosphogens (e.g., creatine phosphate). KCRM is involved in energy transduction and energy homeostasis in tissues with large and fluctuating energy demands, such as skeletal muscle, heart, brain, and sperm, and is an important serum marker of myocardial infarction. KCRM acts as a homodimer in striated muscle and other tissues and as a heterodimer in the heart with similar brain isozymes. Skeletal muscle, as an important secretory organ, differentially secretes cleaved KCRM peptide in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) skeletal muscle tissue. Naturally occurring mutations in KCRM may render individuals with active serum creatine kinase unresponsive to Tenofovir (HY-13910) pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) HIV.
